Helpfile Updates

The THEME section of the Helpfiles has been overhauled, with a History and a Society section added. Feedback is welcome on what else might fit in here, but keep in mind our objective for these files: a basic overview meant to give players a general idea about these aspects of the setting.

Nameserver Change

We changed our name server last night, and while that change propagates, some players may not be able to reach BoD. There’s three ways to address that:

1) First, try to flush your DNS cache. On windows, Start -> Run -> cmd -> ipconfig /flushdns at the prompt. On Mac OSX, see here.

2) If the above doesn’t work, your DNS resolver doesn’t have the information yet. You can skip needing it, however, by just changing the address in your MU*/Telnet client from bod.westeros.org port 3000 to 69.56.178.186 port 3000.

3) As an alternative to the above, you could try using a public DNS—such as Google’s Public DNS—to resolve domain names for you. So far as I can see, the Google DNS is up to date, as is OpenDNS (another public DNS server system). But I’d suggest the first two steps.

Upcoming Event: The King Arrives

This Saturday, October 1st, at 10.00 AM Game Time (that’s equal to Central Time), we are having an event for the return of King Baelor to King’s Landing. The king has been convalescing at Storm’s End for months since his return from Dorne but is now finally strong enough to return to the capital. All characters in King’s Landing can be present and with a few days to go until this event, there’s still time for new players to pick up Cameos or CGed characters to attend.

SP and XP Awards

Based on the nominations for August, a Story Point (SP) was awarded to Farin. Experience Points (XP) were awarded to Albyn, Alyce, Andrya, Ardon, Aurana, Coran, Darius, Jannia, Justyn, Jyana, Luthor, Rachelle, Ryckon, Samara, Talbard, Urston, Victor, and Willard.

For more information concerning the system, see +HELP ADVANCEMENT. For information about how to use story points or experience points you’ve earned, see http://www.westeros.org/BoD/Helpfiles/Category:System::Advancement/

OOC Meetings

We will run a first OOC meeting on Sunday 21st of August at 10.00 AM Game Time (see +time). This will be a trial to see if and in that case how to proceed from there. We are considering trying for monthly or bi-monthly meetings and if we do go ahead with that, we will look at how we can vary the times that the meetings are held at.

The preliminary structure of the meeting will be as follows:

1) Updates on current matters, IC and OOC. This includes current and future plots, code changes, etc. Roughly 10 minutes.

2) Discussion/lecture topic 1. Roughly 15 minutes.

3) Discussion/lecture topic 2. Roughly 15 minutes.

4) Q&A. Roughly 20 minutes.

We will take suggestions for the discussion/lecture topic in advance; we imagine this as matters that need more preparation than what might come up during the Q&A. Suggestions for topics can be made at the forum: http://asoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/topic/55970-any-interest-in-ooc-meetings/

Notes Required

We have tweaked what is required during the last CG room; a private Note detailing some goals for your character now needs to be set. We won’t be requiring existing characters to add them retroactively, but it is strongly encouraged.

We will also, when we find the time, add more categories to Notes to allow for staff-only notes to be set on characters.

Spoiler Policy

We are hoping for more players as a result of the HBO series, and chances are that those players will not have read the books. In light of this, we are going to be temporarily changing our policy on spoilers.

The new policy will be that spoilers for any of the books or any of the episodes of the TV show should not be discussed on any channel except the Spoilers channel. When discussing the books or the TV show in a room, give advance warning so that those who wish can leave.

That said, however, we hope new players will understand that this is a policy change and that there will undoubtedly be slip-ups. New players will have to be proactive in letting people know if they haven’t read the books, but please make sure to do so in a friendly fashion.

Character Creation

Accounts can now be created at the login screen. These accounts will have a VISITOR flag that restricts them in much the same way that a Guest is restricted, but with a couple of important differences:

First off, to start with they will not be able to leave the Godswood (we may change this if it turns out we can accomplish certain other code changes, to allow them to at least visit the other OOC areas). Secondly, they will be able to use the +mail and +bb system and they will be able to join any other channels than what they start out with (Newbie and Connections). We are hoping this means they will be more useful for potential players who want to talk to current players before deciding which character to apply for.

It will take us a while to update all relevant files to include this information and to catch all the spots on the game where information that might now be outdated exists. If you see a Visitor connecting and asking questions about the game, please help out by informing them that they need to apply for a character from the CDB before they can start roleplaying, as we are expecting that it may confuse people into thinking they can create any character they want.

SP and XP Awards

Based on the nominations for May, one Story Point (SP) has been awarded to Reyna. Experience Points (XP) were awarded to Alyse, Ethos, Farin, Pennei, Sarmion, and Stevyn for their contributions to the game.

For more information concerning the system, see +HELP ADVANCEMENT. For information about how to use story points or experience points you’ve earned, see http://www.westeros.org/BoD/Helpfiles/Category:System::Advancement/

Planning the Future

Now that we’ve gone through the death of Daeron II and the coronation of Baelor I, we’d like to invite players to participate in helping us figure out what sort of future events—small or large scale, short term or long term—they’re interested in seeing take place on the game, and being a part of. We’d love your input! We already have some ideas and plans sketched out, but we’re always happy to develop more. We’re not necessarily looking at individual personal plots (though we’d be glad to hear about those, too), but just ideas for things you’ve thought before, “That was cool,” or “That would be cool.”

Bear in mind that we are bound by canon in regards to some things—Baelor will not be dying before his allotted time—so there are limits to what can be done. However, there’s a vast swathe of history out there yet to be made, and we’re looking forward to exploring it with you. On a related note, Dorne’s going to be the most wide-open area in terms of larger-scale events, and it’s an excellent place for those who want to have a somewhat freer hand in terms of plans and plotting. It won’t be a free for all—we still do know certain things—but it’s even less written about than the rest of the Seven Kingdoms.

Please feel free to contact us via e-mail at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), or via +mail on the game, with your ideas, suggestions, and questions about future plans on the game. Or check the BoD forum, where this post will be archived, and start discussing it there.
