12.1. Geography
  • The continent east of the Seven Kingdoms, called Essos, is separated from it by a narrow sea. It is much larger than the continent of the Seven Kingdoms (I: 23. SSM: 1, 2, 3)
  • The Jade Sea is far to the east, and the lands there are half-fabled (I: 23)
  • Vaes Dothrak is east of the Free Cities (I: 23)
  • Beyond Asshai lie the Shadow Lands (I: 86)
  • The Dothraki Sea is a huge expanse of plain lands beginning far east of Pentos (I: 190, 193)
  • Norvos is east of Pentos, a land of rolling hills and terraced farms with small villages sitting behind white stucco walls (I: 192)
  • Valyria left many roads, as old as a thousand years, that run straight as arrows on the eastern continent. These roads show no sign of wear or tear despite their age. Made of magically fused stone and raised half a foot off the ground to allow rain and snow to melt off their shoulders, the roads are broad enough to allow three wagons to pass abreast. (I: 193.   • The Flatlands are relatively sparsely populated, as the Dothraki occasionally pass through. The ruins of towns are testament to their passage (V: 80)
  • The Rhoyne lies between the Dothraki Sea and the Flatlands (V: 80)
  • On leaving the Flatlands, a road leads into the Velvet Hills and to the ruin of the Rhoynish city of Ghoyan Drohe upon the Little Rhoyne (V: 81)
  • The Velvet Hills are not very impressive. A circle of standing stones found there are said to have been raised by giants, while a deep lake is said to have been a den of robbers who now dwell beneath the water and pull fishermen down to their deaths. Deeper still into the hills one may find a huge Valyrian sphinx with a dragon's body and a woman's face, next to an empty plinth were a second sphinx had once stood; that sphinx was carried away by the Dothraki to Vaes Dothrak (V: 81-82)
  • The Port of Ibben is on Ibben, a large island nation in the Shivering Sea, which is the polar sea north of the eastern continent. There is nothing but ice north of it (SSM: 1, 2)
  • The Stepstones are a chain of large islands in the narrow sea east of Dorne and Storm's End (SSM: 1)
  • Vessels bound for Asshai go east through the Summer Sea and the Jade Sea, which are connected by the straits of Qarth (SSM: 1)
  • Maps still mark out the lands of the Andals on the eastern continent, but the area has seen so many invasions and migrations that very little of the Andal people remains there (SSM: 1)
  • The Free Cities are much nearer to the Seven Kingdoms than they are to Qarth (SSM: 1)
  • There is no connection between Westeros and the eastern continent by way of the far north (SSM: 1)
