House Florent of Brightwater

General Information

The Florents are not one of the strongest families in the Reach, being able to call no more than 2,000 swords to their banner, but they have made ambitious marriage ties. They often boast of having a superior claim to Highgarden and the Reach than House Tyrell, and even among the Tyrells some think it may be true. The current lord of the house is Alester Florent, wed to Lady Melara of House Crane. She has given him three children, his unknighted heir Alekyne, his daughter Melessa wed to Lord Randyll Tarly, and his daughter Rhea, wed to Lord Leyton Hightower.

Lord Florent has several siblings, from Ser Axell who is castellan of Dragonstone and the dead Ser Ryam whose daughter Selyse is wed to Lord Stannis Baratheon, to Ser Colin whose daughter Delena bore King Robert’s acknowledged bastard, Edric Storm, and Rylene, wed to Ser Rychard Crane.

Spoilers

Lord Alester has changed sides with surprising alacrity in the war of the kings. First declaring for Renly, after Renly’s death he was the first of the Reach lords to bend the knee to King Stannis and to take up the Red God. Ser Erren Florent, nephew to Lord Alester and brother to Queen Selyse, was sent with Ser Parmen Crane to Bitterbridge in an attempt to win over the forces there to Stannis’s banner. He and Crane were both arrested and taken into captivity at Highgarden.

No Florents were apparently captured at the Blackwater to be presented to King Joffrey, although a Florent bastard was ordered to be executed for threatening the king. Ser Imry Florent died on the Blackwater. Ser Erren Florent, who had been sent with Ser Parmen Crane to try and win the Tyrells toto Stannis’s side, is held captive at Highgarden. Lord Alester was briefly Stannis’s Hand, but his attempts to surrender led to his imprisonment and eventual burning.

Brightwater Keep and its associated lands have been granted to Ser Garlan Tyrell, Lord Tyrell’s second son, by King Joffrey Baratheon.
