An old man in his sixties, the Grand Maester has served four kings, beginning with Aegon V. He is a stately, impressive older man, with a magnificent beard. He wears a maester’s robes, though of finer material than the norm, and his maester’s chain has a dozen other chains woven through it embellished with gemstones.
The actor cast in the role is about 10-15 years older than Pycelle.
Grand Maester Pycelle speaks to Lord Eddard regarding Lord Arryn, and lends him the book that Arryn was reading in the days before his death. He repeatedly seems intent on emphasizing the perogatives of the queen and her father, including when reports arrive that Tywin’s bannerman Gregor Clegane has taken to raiding the riverlands. After Lord Eddard is deposed, Pycelle argues for Sansa’s marriage to be dissolved—or at least, appears to do so, as a means of convincing her to do as Cersei requires.
Later, Pycelle is revealed to have taken the prostitute Ros into his bed, despite his vows of celibacy. Once she leaves after growing bored of his rambling talk, he springs up and shows much more energy and clearness of mind until he leaves his chamber, at which point he stoops over and resumes his guise as a failing old man.
