The only surviving son of Lord Balon Greyjoy, Theon was taken away from the Iron Islands as Lord Eddard’s ward against his father’s will, as surety against his attempting any further rebellions. Theon has been treated well by the Starks, for the most part, and is practically like an older brother to Robb in particular. A skilled archer, he’s also arrogant, sly, and a womanizer.
Sent by Robb to the Iron Islands, Theon finds a cold welcome from his father and a less-than-pleasant surprise in meeting his sister after many years apart. Having suggested that Robb offer Balon the rule of the Iron Islands and the westerlands if he joins him, Theon supports the plan, only to find his father refuse it and instead set his eyes on attacking the North. Theon struggles with whether he should warn Robb or not, but in the end chooses to swear himself to the Greyjoy cause and the Drowned God. Given a ship and crew, he is given the work of harrying the Stony Shore, but with the support of his lieutenant Dagmer he makes a bold attack on Winterfell when its forces are largely away. He forces Bran to surrender the castle to him, and later personally executes Ser Rodrik Cassel. However, after a night spent with Osha, the wildling woman slips out from the bedroom as Theon sleeps and helps to steal away the children. Tricked into believing they have fled Winterfell, Theon cannot find them and then is convinced by Dagmer to murder two boys and claim they are Bran and Rickon. Troubled by his conscience and the constant sounding of a horn from northern forces now surrounding the castle, he determines to die in a glorious charge… only to be knocked unconscious by Dagmer, who with the other wildlings drag him out to surrender him to the northmen.
