An old “wandering crow” of the Night’s Watch, Yoren is a ranger who is regularly sent out to scour the Seven Kingdoms for recruits to the Watch. He’s described as stooped and sinister, with a twisted shoulder and greasy, lice-ridden black hair and beard. His teeth are stained red from the sourleaf he’s constantly chewing. Though ill-favored, he’s tough and pragmatic, with years of experience behind him.
On the show, Yoren is rather less unsavoury in appearance as well as manners.
Yoren protects Arya and Gendry from the gold cloaks, and leads his caravan through the riverlands. One evening he reveals to Arya the reason he joined the watch, involving his hatred for a man who murdered his brother and his all-consuming desire for revenge until one day he slew the man. Roused by approaching men, Yoren confronts Ser Amory Lorch and a number of Lannister soldiers who insist they must submit themselves to them, but Yoren refuses, standing by the Watch’s traditional neutrality. Lorch has his men attack. Yoren kills some, only to be eventually be killed by several others. In the aftermath, some of his recruits are killed while others are captured, including Arya, Gendry, and Hot Pie.
