Is it just us, or do these things contain something? Internal organs, perhaps? It was very common in the Middle Ages for internal organs to be removed and (in the case of great lords and kings) sent to be buried in a place separately from the body. This isn’t specifically mentioned in the novels, but they certainly do remove the viscera when attempting to prepare a corpse for display in state.
