As we’ve noted in the past, the weapon has been patterned after the 18th-19th century smallsword rather than a rapier. GRRM has noted that Needle is not, in fact, supposed to be anything quite like this, and for that matter that the swords bravos use aren’t really rapiers either, but the production went with the very distinct, slender thrusting blade over something nearer his intent.
