House Seaworth

A black ship, an onion proper on its sail, on pale grey

General Information

The first of the house, Ser Davos, was an infamous smuggler who managed to slip past the Redwyne blockade of Storm’s End during Robert’s Rebellion. He managed to save the besieged castle from starvation and defeat, but young Stannis arrested him for the criminal he was. He ruled that Davos should lose the fingers of one hand, and removed them himself at Davos’s request. Then he rewarded Davos for his courage, giving him knighthood and a keep with lands in the Cape of Wrath.

Ser Davos has seven sons by his wife Marya, a former carpenter’s daughter. His eldest son and heir is Dale, captain of the Lady Marya, and his fifth son Devan is squire to Lord Stannis.

Spoilers

Ser Davos was sent as envoy to the lords of the stormlands to win their support for Stannis as he made his play for Dragonstone, but none would join him. He is completely loyal to King Stannis and at his command took part in the murder of Ser Cortnay Penrose by delivering Melisandre, the Red Priestess, past the walls of Storm’s End to work her dark magic.

Ser Davos and four of his seven sons were part of the fleet that assaulted King’s Landing. Much of the fleet was destroyed by wildfire. All of four of Ser Davos’s elder sons were lost, and he himself nearly died. He was stranded on a small rocky isle for many days until chance blew one of Stannis’s ships towards him. Blaming Melisandre for the disaster, he planned to kill her but her magic gave her warning and he was arrested. In the end, Stannis lifted Davos Seaworth to Lord of the Rainwood, Admiral of the Narrow Sea, and Hand of the King.

Lord Davos remains staunchly loyal to Stannis, even when he foiled his plan to kill his bastard nephew Edric Storm to let Melisandre raise a stone dragon. Explaining his reasons, Lord Davos was not killed. Instead, he helped Stannis sail to the Wall to face the Others.
