Our best look at the master of whisperers, Varys, that we’ve had yet. It’s clear here that this is a scene from the end of the tourney in King’s Landing. Some have objected to his portrayal, finding him too serious, but it should be remembered that Varys is very adept at playing parts—having formerly been a mummer, a sort of actor—and will change his persona as it suits him. In this particular scene in the novel, he is explicitly noted to be speaking in a more forceful, direct manner than he usually does.
The line he speaks, “You are the King’s Hand, and the king is a fool,” is a direct quotation from the novel.Copyright ©
