HBO's 'A Song of Ice and Fire' TV Show

Mance Rayder

Played by Ciarán Hinds

Once a ranger of the Night’s Watch, Mance Rayder is now the king-beyond-the-Wall, having forged an alliance of the disparate wildlings clans and tribes with the aim of forcing their way past the Wall. In his early middle years, Mance began life as a wildling orphan who was taken in by the Night’s Watch after his family were killed while raiding—hence his last name—and grew up to be among the best of the rangers, and also among the worst, because he loved the free folk, their songs, and their women too much.

Ciarán Hinds is significantly older than the character in the novels, who was described as a “young man” about a dozen years prior to the start of the series.
