A walkway above a gate at Castle Black. We believe that the gate is there to help block out views out from certain angles, for economic reasons (i.e. no need to hire VFX people to deal with a parking lot or a mudpit outside. The deigns I saw for Castle Black definitely did not include exterior walls that required defending.
