The Wall, in all its massiveness. The three rangers of the Night’s Watch that we’re introduced to in the first scene on the novel—Ser Waymar Royce, Will, and Gared—are riding out beyond-the-Wall and into the haunted forest.

Linda and I first saw this as part of the 15 minute reel HBO exhibited for us, and our jaws dropped. This is stunning.... and almost incredibly accurate. Notice the wide span of cleared ground between the Wall and the forest; in the novels, the Watch keeps the Wall clear of the haunted forest to a distance of about half a mile. While it’s clearly not so long a distance here, it’s still a nod to that.
