The only surviving son of the Mad King Aerys, as a little boy Viserys and his pregnant mother were spirited away from King’s Landing before the fall of the Targaryen dynasty. His mother died giving birth to his sister, Daenerys. Since then, Viserys and his sister have lived in exile, and Viserys has become known as the Beggar King because of their poverty as they move from Free City to Free City, trying to find someone who will aid him in retaking the Iron Throne. A thin young man, Viserys has the unnatural looks of the Targaryens, but he has lived too long in dread and privation; he has a notorious temper, and often abuses his sister.
Arranging his sister’s marriage to Khal Drogo, Viserys insists on traveling with them to Vaes Dothrak, not trusting that Drogo will keep his promise to provide him an army otherwise. During the journey he takes up with Doreah, Daenerys’s slave. Viserys begins to lose control over his increasingly-confident sister. After Daenerys succeeds in the horse heart-eating rite and her unborn child is declared the Stallion that Mounts the World, Viserys becomes convinced that he’ll get nothing from Drogo. He attempts to take Daenerys’s eggs, but Ser Jorah stops him despite having sworn his sword to his service. Later that night, drunk, Viserys barges into the Dothraki feasting hall and demands what was promised to him. He threatens Daenerys and draws his sword, breaking the laws of Vaes Dothrak. Drogo has his bloodriders overpower Viserys, and then gives him his promised golden crown… by upending a vat of molten gold over his head as Daenerys watches unmoved by Viserys’s pleas.
