King Joffrey Baratheon

Per pale crimson and gold, a golden lion rampant and a black stag (© RMB)

General Information

King Joffrey’s personal banner displays both of his lineages, and it is notable that in many cases the lion of Lannister takes precedence in his garb than the stag of Baratheon.

Spoilers

Recieving the crown after his King Robert’s death, despite the fact that he is truly the son of Ser Jaime Lannister by way of his incestuous relationship with his sister Queen Cersei, one the fast major acts of Joffrey’s reign was to remove Ser Barristan Selmy from the Kingsguard and replace him with the brutal Hound. The next major act of his reign was to execute Lord Eddard Stark, formerly Hand, despite the fact that exile to the Wall would have won the realm peace.

After being rescued from the forces of his “uncle”, King Stannis, by the western alliance led by the lords Tywin Lannister and Mace Tyrell, King Joffrey accepted the anullment of his betrothal to Sansa Stark and became betrothed to the Lady Margaery Tyrell. While the wedding did take place between the two, it was not consummated before King Joffrey was poisoned at his wedding feast. His uncle, Tyrion Lannister, was wrongly accused of the crime and his fate was sealed in a trial by combat when his champion, Prince Oberyn Martell of Dorne, was slain by the Mountain that Rides. The Imp escaped imprisonment, murdering his father Lord Tywin before he disappeared.

Joffrey’s brother is now King Tommen I, with his mother as Queen Regent. Lord Mace has petitioned that his daughter Margaery, twice a queen and twice widowed, now marry the 9-year-old king to seal the alliance that seems to have won the War of the Five Kings. King Tommen appears to use his brother’s personal arms.
