In the background to the left one can see a gate. This seems to be there in large part to help block off angles looking beyond the catwalk, rather than trying to indicate that Castle Black has a surrounding wall. In accordance with the books, the design for Castle Black leaves it open to approach on all sides except for the Wall to the north, as the Night’s Watch’s only enemies lie beyond it.
