Here we see Jon Snow, Samwell Tarly, and Pypar in the courtyard of Castle Black. Now you, too, can see how muddy the grounds are!
Jon and Sam wear quilted gambesons underneath a rather curious armor. It looks like a sort of ribbed canvas or leather, with the ribs presumably stiffening the protection it affords. Of course, in the novels the recruits practice in full armor, including mail shirts, helms, and shields.
