Today marks GRRM’s 78th birthday, and there’s a nice early gift for George ahead of the occasion, thanks to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms winning its very first Emmy Award in its inaugural outing!

At the 78th Emmy Awards, the series took home the award for Outstanding Stunt Performance. The award went to the stunt performers Zach Roberts, Gyula Tóth, Chris Cox and Jake Cox for their (spectacular) work on “In the Name of the Mother,” the fifth episode of the show’s first season which featured the much-anticipated trial of seven sequence.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms had received nine nominations in all, including Outstanding Drama Series, which was a great result for the show.

George nevertheless had plenty of reason to celebrate, and took part in pre-Emmy and afterparty events, as well as attending the award show alongside show runner Ira Parker and actors Peter Claffey, Dexter Sol Ansell, and more from the show.

In related news, in a post-Emmys interview with Deadline, HBO and HBO Max chairman and CEO Casey Bloys said that the 2nd season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is expected in the “first half of 2027”. Filming on the adaptation of “The Sworn Sword” has already been completed. That will be followed by the 4th and final season of House of the Dragon, which HBO has planned for a 2028 release. When HBO announced the renewals last year, Variety reported that the plan would give viewers new Westeros television every year through 2028, so that still trakcs.

Asked by Deadline whether there had been any further movement on expanding the Game of Thrones franchise, Bloys pointed to the coming seasons of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon, adding, “Besides that, no, nothing else.” We would be cautious about reading that as confirmation that every other project previously reported to be in development has been abandoned. In an earlier interview with Variety, Bloys specifically noted that development projects are often reported as though they were actual productions, emphasizing that only House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms had so far made it from development into series even as we already know that Beau Willamon is actively developing an Aegon’s Conquest feature project.
