A Speedier Site

No, the Citadel isn’t moving. However, we’ve implemented gzipping on the fly. What does that mean?

In brief, it means that before sending the web page you request to you, Westeros.org’s server will compress the page (just like a program like ZIP or RAR will compress a file). 99.9% of browsers support gzipped content. The end result is that download times for large pages (in the sense of being full of content, like the SSM or Concordance) should be significantly faster, especiall for dialup users, as a 110kb file is now being sent as a 36kb file—a major improvement!

For those who want to learn how we managed this, or who want to get a more detailed explanation of gzip, try this article at WhatsMyIP.org.
