James Hibberd (with contributions from Kim Masters) has the scoop, sharing that multiple sources have told him that:
“... the project as very early stage development, with no filmmaker, cast or writer yet attached. But the company is keen on exploring the idea of Westeros invading cinemas.”
Hibberd’s article places this in context of recent history at HBO, including the facts that Benioff & Weiss had briefly considered a trilogy of films to wrap up the TV show, George R.R. Martin was interested in seeing his universe on the big screen, and the sense that the idea that a property could be only on TV or only in cinemas is increasingly considered outdated in this new era dominated by streaming.
Near the end, Hibberd also notes this:
This is not entirely true—there was some early work on developing a Jon Snow post-GoT series that was shelved—but it’s interesting that Hibberd brings it up. In context, it seems he’s just speculating at possibilities for the film treatment, but maybe it’s a hint that one or more of his sources have indicated the thinking is in that direction…
