EP609: The Battle of the Bastards

Written by David Benioff & D.B. Weiss
Directed by Miguel Sapochnik

Book to Screen

Inspired by the Books

  • Meereen: The second siege of Meereen is inspired by the novels, although it has come in a somewhat different context.

Possible Developments in Future Books

  • Meereen: Daenerys, her dragons, and the Dothraki putting an end to the “Battle of Fire” seems possible, although from remarks Martin has made they may be somewhat later develops in The Winds of Winter.
  • The North:
  • Ramsay Bolton’s death seems likely enough at some point in the series, but the circumstances are unclear at this point. The army of the Vale eventually having a role in the military affairs of the North falls in line with Littlefinger’s plans as expressed in the novels.

Entirely Different

  • The North: Rickon Stark is not likely to die as a hostage of Ramsay. Similarly, it’s not likely Sansa will oversee Ramsay’s execution, given she has no real connection to the character in the novels.
  • Meereen: As discussed previously, Asha and Theon aren’t headed to Meereen in the novels, and won’t be making any such deals with Daenerys. This is very loosely inspired by Victarion’s journey to Slaver’s Bay, but it’s very unlikely he’ll be having much of a negotiation with Daenerys. Finally, it’s plain that Jaime of the novels has never revealed to a soul (until A Storm of Swords, that is) that there were caches of wildfire beneath King’s Landing; in the novels, Tyrion has to be told about the discovery of such caches by the pyromancer Hallyne.
