Brotherhood without Banners

Eighth GRRM Podcast

In the eighth and final installment of George R. R. Martin’s podcast series, GRRM discusses the fans of "A Song of Ice and Fire". Besides using iTunes and RSS feed aggregators as discussed here, the episode can also be directly downloaded for listening here.

Preliminary Worldcon Schedule

A very preliminary program schedule for this year’s Worldcon has been published. It is, absolutely, subject to change.

Worldcon Human Chess Match

During this year’s Worldcon in Los Angeles, one of the official convention events will be a human chess match organized by the Brotherhood without Banners. There are many slots still open for volunteers, and discussion under way concerning it. If you’re curious to learn more, check this thread on the A Song of Ice and Fire board.

Brotherhood Without Banners Raffle

The Brotherhood without Banners, the George R. R. Martin fan club, has announced its annual Worldcon Raffle Fundraiser. The list of prizes is extensive—including a limited edition print by Mike S. Miller, a limited edition copy of the Hedge Knight comic’s first issue, audiobooks for the A Song of Ice and Fire series, and more.

Buy a ticket (or ten, or twenty)!

Hugo Nominations Deadline

The Hugo Awards nominationsdeadline is fast approaching, with the voting closing at midnight (Pacific Standard Time) on the 10th. If you are a member of L.A. Con IV or attended Interaction in Glasgow, you are eligible to vote.  To make it easier, you can vote online. We’ve posted some recommendations and ideas for eligible works here, with comments from Parris as well as a link to GRRM’s blog entry where he makes a couple further suggestions.

It shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes of your time (and very probably much less), so please nominate and help make this year one of the best award years in recent Hugo history.

Support the Brotherhood

As previously reported, the Brotherhood without Banners fanclub is gearing up for this year’s Worldcon in Los Angeles. Part of that includes collecting funds to make sure that the Raven Award winners for this year can make it, as well as making sure the BwB can throw the best parties, but another part is organizing the volunteers who’ll help make the parties—and the convention itself—a blast. If you’re attending the convention and plan on taking part in some of the BwB events, give the above links a look and volunteer your time!

Raven Award Fundraising

As the first ever recipients of the Brotherhood without Banner’s Raven Award, we thought we’d post a reminder that the 2006 Worldcon in L.A. is fast approaching, and that two new recipients have been selected for their tireless efforts on behalf of the fan community.

More Boskone Fundraising

To raise some more funds for Boskone, a raffle has also been started to supplment the previously-reported auction. One of the prizes is a signed, personally inscribed copy of A Game of Thrones, and it’s only $1 a ticket—so why not throw in some money? Details can be found here.

Boskone Fundraising Auction

For this year’s Boskone, the Brotherhood without Banners is planning to turn up in force and throw a few great parties while they’re at it. To help raise funds to cover the costs of these parties, some interesting books have been put up for auction on eBay. You can find them here.

Globe and Mail Profile

Canada’s Globe and Mail has published a good profile of George R. R. Martin. The article is no doubt prompted by the fact that GRRM is touring Canada right now.

Bwb Charity Drive Success

The Brotherhood without Banners Charity Drive (previously mentioned here) was a roaring success, raising over $1,000 for the Child’s Play organization. In fact, it was so successful that the BwB is listed on the site as a Gold Sponsor!

2006 Raven Awards Announced

The Brotherhood without Banners has announced the latest recipients of its Raven Award, the fans known as Mormont and Skylark!  Congratulations!

BwB Charity Drive

The Brotherhood without Banners is organizing a charity drive this holiday season to raise money for two charities chosen by GRRM and Parris, the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary and Child’s Play. Please support this worthy cause. To learn about it, go here.

Detroit Free Press on ASoIaF

Marta Salja, books writer for the Detroit Free Press, has done an excellent job of both reviewing A Feast for Crows and profiling GRRM and the “A Song of Ice and Fire” fan community. If you’re part of the Brotherhood without Banners, you may even notice some familiar names…

BwB Katrina Fund and Birthday Greetings

Dave McCaman of the Brotherhood Without Banners Fan Club called for donations towards a gift for GRRM and Parris to mark the successful completion of A Feast for Crows. Hundreds of dollars had been raised, when tragedy struck New Orleans. George happens to go to Mardi Gras every year, participating with the Endymion Krewe (whose medallions have served as the sigil of office of Lords of the Brotherhood), and so we all know that he must be feeling this particularly deeply.
