George R.R. Martin has provided new information on an anthology slated for October, Book of Swords, which will contain a never-before-published piece of “fake history” that was originally created for The World of ICe and Fire. We reported on it last week, but waited on reporting more as we knew GRRM was going to provide more information at his “Not a Blog”. Of particular interest to ASoIaF fans are the following:
Martin also shared the full table of contents:
Introduction by Gardner Dozois
THE BEST MAN WINS, by K.J. Parker
HIS FATHER’S SWORD, by Robin Hobb
THE HIDDEN GIRL, by Ken Liu
THE SWORD OF DESTINY, by Matthew Hughes
“I AM A HANDSOME MAN,” SAID APOLLO CROW, by Kate Elliott
THE TRIUMPH OF VIRTUE, by Walter Jon Williams
THE MOCKING TOWER, by Daniel Abraham
HRUNTING, by C.J. Cherryh
A LONG, COLD TRAIL, by Garth Nix
WHEN I WAS A HIGHWAYMAN, by Ellen Kushner
THE SMOKE OF GOLD IS GLORY by Scott Lynch
THE COLGRID CONUNDRUM, by Rich Larson
THE KING’S EVIL, by Elizabeth Bear
WATERFALLING, by Lavie Tidhar
THE SWORD TYRASTE, by Cecelia Holland
THE SONS OF THE DRAGON, by George R.R. Martin
Finally, Martin notes a second anthology edited by Dozois, titled Book of Magic, is in the works and that the anthology will reprint a non-ASoIaF story of his. We’ve no direct knowledge of what that story is, though we would guess it’s either “The Lonely Songs of Laren Dorr” or “In the Lost Lands”, which are two of the three out-right fantasy short stories Martin wrote prior to his career as a novelist (the third, “The Ice Dragon”, has been twice released in illustrated form, most recently with art by Luis Royo) . All three stories are included in Dreamsongs, which is a terrific collection that we highly recommend for fans of Martin’s work.
