Over at Not a Blog, George R.R. Martin has continued his promised updates about his recent travels, this time discussing his visit to the HBO production of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (George notes it may still end up having The Hedge Knight as the title). This one’s quite special, because George features a number of candid, behind-the-scenes photos from his visits showing the Ashford meadow tourney grounds set, as well as actors in costume including the eponymous Ser Duncan the Tall (played by Peter Claffey) and the cousins Fossoway as well.
George discusses quite a few details of the show along the way, and reveals some information about the origins of “The Hedge Knight” that even we weren’t aware of, indicating that he considered quite a few possible angles about what to write about when Robert Silverberg first invited him to contribute to the Legends anthology. Instead of Dunk & Egg, we might have had stories about:
“Robert Baratheon before he was king, say. Barristan Selmy might do, or one of his brothers of the Kingsguard… maybe the Sword of the Morning. I could write about Robert’s Rebellion or the Ninepenny Kings, or maybe set something in Oldtown at the Citadel. I mulled all the possibilities.”
George concludes by saying he’d seen a rough cut of the first episode, which he loved, and he can’t wait to see more. Sounds promising!
