House of the Dragon Emmy Nominations

This year’s nominees for the Emmys have been announced, and HBO’s House of the Dragon has done well for itself with six

eight (or nine, sort of) nominations, contributing to the phenomenal HBO/MAX total nominations of 127, and tying a decades-old record (set by CBS in 1973 and matched by NBC in 1993) of 4 separate dramas nominated in Best Drama.  See the categories below!

House of the Dragon was nominated in the following categories:

  • Drama Series: Alongside fellow HBO shows “Succession, “The White Lotus”, and “The Last of Us”
  • Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Period or Fantasy Program (One Hour or More): For the premiere episode, “The Heirs of the Dragon”
  • Outstanding Cinematography for a Series (One Hour): For the episode “The Lord of the Tides”
  • Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes: Again for “The Heirs of the Dragon”
  • Outstanding Period And/Or Character Makeup: For “We Light the Way”
  • Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup: For “The Lord of the Tides”
  • Outstanding Sound Editing For a Comedy or Drama Series: For “The Black Queen”
  • Outstanding Visual Effects in a Season or Movie

Finally, a related ninth nomination was recorded for Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction or Reality Series, for HBO’s House of the Dragon: Inside the Episode featurettes.

It’s worth noting the show garnered no acting nods, which will be a shock to many, particularly as many Emmy experts and pundits had tipped Emma d’Arcy and (especially) Matt Smith as probable nominees.
