Via Variety, a press conference today with House of the Dragon ahow runner Ryan Condal provided the confirmation of what many suspected: the fourth season will also be the last for the show. This makes sense, given the pace. There are some other interesting remarks there, including Condal indicating he doesn’t yet know if the third season will be 8 or 10 episodes yet, and that he believes production will begin in early 2025:
“I haven’t had discussions with HBO about it. I would just anticipate the cadence of the show, from a dramatic storytelling perspective, will continue to be the same from Season 2 on.”
This feels about the right length of time for the show, personally. The main issue is there’s a lot of potentially very expensive battles, and with the Battle of Rook’s Rest having taken a year from start to finish, it’s going to be a big challenge. I suspect one solution will be to find creative ways to skip the actual details on some of the battles and show the aftermath so they can focus on just a couple. But still, it’s going to be a challenge.
