An article in MSN’s entertainment section discusses prospects for written works of fantasy to leap to television and motion pictures. In the course of this, they mention A Song of Ice and Fire and the fact that HBO holds the rights, and make an odd suggestion concerning casting.
GRRM’s official site has been updated with a report that the Fevre Dream limited edition by Subterranean Press is nearing publication. Therei s also a new “Not a Blog” entry discussing progress on several fronts, including A Dance with Dragons. In comments, George also responds to an individual concerned with his level of enthusiasm for the series as well as the state of his health, and in the course of it references the fact that a chapter featuring Tyrion and the mysterious Shrouded Lord is one that will likely not be one included in the final book. This illustrates that the writing process for GRRM is one where he may explore particular ideas and then decide they’re not right for the story.
George R.R. Martin has posted details at “Not a Blog” concerning the forthcoming release by Dark Sword Miniatures of ten Ice and Fire miniatures sculpted by Tom Meier. The figures will be released in November, and will be priced at $9.99 each. Dark Sword Miniatures also has plans for various events, including a miniature painting contest, to promote the line.
GRRM’s official site has been updated with news concerning the Italian edition of The Ice Dragon, which has specially-commissioned cover and interior art. GRRM points out sources for fans and collectors interested in aquiring it.
Dark Sword Miniatures have posted another update, this time featuring Tom Meier’s sculpt of Ser Loras Tyrell, the Knight of Flowers. In the update, they note that this now brings the total number of completed miniatures to ten, including two new Night’s Watch figures not yet on display. As they’re on schedule, there’ll be a special online pre-release event in early November, with further details forthcoming.
The incomparable Tom Meier has completed the miniatures of Cersei and Jaime for Dark Sword Miniatures. Pictures of the miniatures can be seen on the front page, along with newly-inked miniatures of Jon Snow, Melisandre, and two brothers of the Night’s Watch.

James Rigney, better known to many as Robert Jordan, bestselling author of The Wheel of Time series, passed away on September 16th after struggling with illness this past year. His cousin Wilson announced the news on Jordan’s blog. Responses have been pouring in from his fans, and others in the field have begun to comment such as Patrick Nielsen Hayden and George R. R. Martin.

GRRM’s official site has been updated with the official announcement for Songs of the Dying Earth, a Jack Vance tribute anthology edited by George and Gardner Dozois. The announcement confirms the publishers as Tor and HarperCollins Voyager, and indicates that the Subterranean Press limited edition will feature illustrations by Charles Vess. GRRM intends to contribute a story, but it will not be written until after A Dance with Dragons is completed. Publication is expected for some time in 2009.
A recent, massive science fiction and fantasy gathering in Chengdu, China, featured the Galaxy Awards for genre literature. It turns out that among the winners is George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, in the category of “Best Fantasy”. Congratulations to GRRM and his Chinese publisher, Chonqing Press!
As previously reported, the Songs of the Dying Earth anthology co-edited by George R.R. Martin and Gardner Dozois has found U.S. and U.K. publishers, as well as a publisher for a more exclusive first edition in Subterranean Press. According to this unsourced report that the U.S. and U.K. publishers are, respecitively, TOR and Voyager.

Martin’s short fiction which was originally published by Subterranean Press as GRRM: A RRetrospective. Winners will receive signed ARCs (advanced reading copies) of both volumes of Dreamsongs (Volume 1, Volume 2 ).
As previously revealed, George R. R. Martin and Gardner Dozois will be co-editing a tribute anthology titled Songs of the Dying Earth, featuring a number of others contributing original tales set in Jack Vance’s memorable Dying Earth milieu. At the time that it was announced, only a British publisher had been secured. It’s now been revealed the Subterranean Press has landed the rights.
A new anthology, Wastelands: Stories of the Apocalypse, contains a reprint of George R. R. Martin’s “Dark, Dark Were the Tunnels”. As part of the publicity for the volume—which contains stories Stephen King, Orson Scott Card, Cory Doctorow, Octavia E. Butler, and more—a website has been launched by the editor with more information about the stories and selected contributing authors.
